The Nathan Ott Quartet performs in Kassel with the program “Coltrane 100” to commemorate the 100th birthday of the pioneering jazz musician John Coltrane. The focus is not on a classical tribute, but rather on engaging with Coltrane's musical thinking.
The concert at tif – Theater im Fridericianum combines composed passages with free improvisation. This creates a musical evening that captures Coltrane's innovative approach to jazz while leaving room for personal sound ideas, spontaneous developments, and individual expressions.
Jazz between Composition and Improvisation
John Coltrane is considered one of the most influential figures in jazz history. His musical thinking has inspired generations of musicians and has significantly expanded jazz. The Nathan Ott Quartet approaches this legacy not by merely repeating well-known pieces, but with an independent concert concept.
“Coltrane 100” promises an interplay of defined compositional structures and open improvisational moments. Familiar musical impulses can lead in new directions. The quartet creates a framework in which collaboration, interaction, and spontaneous musical decisions play a central role.
