Between Shapes: Helga Gebert's Fairy Tale Worlds at GRIMMWELT Kassel
The special exhibition BETWEEN SHAPES | HELGA GEBERT invites visitors to an impressive contemplation of works between image and word at GRIMMWELT Kassel. From June 12, 2026, to April 11, 2027, the first comprehensive solo exhibition showcases the narrative power of an artist who understood fairy tale images as vibrant spaces of cultural understanding.
Illustrations as Places of Storytelling
Helga Gebert's illustrations guide through the children's and household tales of the Brothers Grimm, through stories from 1001 Nights, and through her own fantastic tales. Her pictures do not merely retell: they shift perspectives, change meanings, and open up spaces between traditional materials and contemporary interpretations.
A Shaping Voice of Children's and Young Adult Literature
Born in 1935 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Helga Gebert was one of the important figures in the renewal of German children's and young adult literature in the 1970s and 1980s. As an illustrator, author, and translator, she shaped the program of Beltz & Gelberg. Her artistic practice ranges from fine pen drawings and watercolors to richly detailed oil paintings.
Between Tradition, Transformation, and Irritation
The exhibition makes visible how cultural influences, hierarchies, and forms of appropriation are inscribed in fairy tale illustrations. Figures like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Aladdin, dragons, and genies appear in a visual language full of fantasy, humor, and psychological sensitivity. The aesthetic experience arises from the interplay of familiar motifs, surprising body postures, expressive faces, and narrative breaks.
Exhibition Experience for Adults and Children
Biographical insights, interactive elements, and a puzzle trail for children deepen the engagement with Gebert's work. The curation thus combines art historical expertise with cultural education and a playful approach to illustration, fairy tales, and visual storytelling. An accompanying exhibition catalog with numerous images and scholarly contributions expands the contemplation of the works.
Art Experience at GRIMMWELT Kassel
The exhibition was curated by Hanna Krüger and realized in collaboration with the design office Gebert & Krüger. Visitors experience an exhibition atmosphere where painting, illustration, biography, and narrative culture intertwine. The presentation opens up new questions: How does an image change one’s understanding of a story? What shapes emerge in the space between word and image?
Conclusion: Between Shapes is an inspiring art experience for fairy tale lovers, families, literature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the power of images. The exhibition combines aesthetic experience, art historical context, and cultural education into an extraordinary encounter with Helga Gebert's fantastic worlds of figures. A visit to GRIMMWELT Kassel enriches the perspective on fairy tales, illustration, and the art of storytelling.
