Charles Ray at Fridericianum: Thinking Sculpture as Space
With Charles Ray, the Fridericianum in Kassel presents from August 22, 2026, to January 3, 2027, the first institutional solo exhibition of the American sculptor in Germany. The exhibition leads to an extraordinary art experience, where body, material, scale, and space merge into an aesthetic experience of great immediacy.
An Exhibition Between Physicality and Spirituality
Charles Ray, born in 1953 in Chicago and living in Los Angeles since 1981, is considered one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries. For over five decades, he has used the means of sculpture to explore the contemporary world, the history of art, and fundamental questions of human physicality and spirituality.
Ray thinks of sculpture not just as an object but as a spatial situation. His works emerge from an intensive reflection on volume, surface, emptiness, and the relationship between the piece and exhibition architecture. The material span of his works ranges from a few grams to nearly twenty tons.
Artwork Examination in the Historical Fridericianum
The exhibition makes visible how closely Ray's art is connected to art history, the genesis of art, and its installation in space. Each sculpture alters the exhibition atmosphere: It directs the gaze, shifts distances, and invites visitors to perceive their own bodies in relation to the work.
Forms appear both familiar and unsettling. Precise surfaces, monumental dimensions, and the tension between realistic representation and conceptual elevation open a multifaceted aesthetic experience. The curation creates an environment in which not only individual artworks but also their spatial relationships to each other become legible.
Charles Ray and Kassel
After his participation in documenta 9 in 1992, Charles Ray returns to Kassel with this solo exhibition. The Fridericianum connects international contemporary art with the unique history of a place closely related to documenta and the cultural discourse about contemporary art.
The exhibition invites concentrated artwork examination while also opening access to cultural education. It is suitable for art enthusiasts, students, families with older teenagers, and anyone who wants to experience sculpture not just as an observation but as a physically and spatially effective event. The exhibition contains depictions of nudity; the work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… suggests a virtual sexual act and is recommended for ages 16 and older.
Visiting and Exhibition Atmosphere
The Fridericianum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as on public holidays from 11 AM to 6 PM, and Thursdays until 8 PM. The regular admission fee is 6 euros, reduced 4 euros. Students and trainees pay 2 euros. Admission is free on Wednesdays, for children and teenagers up to 18 years old, school classes, and students with a cultural ticket. Public tours are held regularly and are included in the admission price.
Visitors to the exhibition experience sculpture as movement through space: a shift between proximity and distance, weight and lightness, materiality and imagination. Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises an intense encounter with contemporary art and a cultural enrichment that can only be fully grasped through immediate aesthetic experience. A visit is worthwhile for all who wish to discover sculpture live, physically, and with an open mind.
