Charles Ray at the Fridericianum: Sculpture as an Intense Spatial Experience
From August 22, 2026, to January 3, 2027, the Fridericianum in Kassel presents the first institutional solo exhibition by Charles Ray in Germany. The exhibition introduces the work of one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries and provides a concentrated exploration of corporeality, materiality, scale, and space.
When Sculpture is Made of Space
Charles Ray uses the means of sculpture to investigate art history, the genesis of art, and the conditions of its installation. His works range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons. It is precisely in this apparent contradiction that his artistic thinking unfolds: sculpture does not appear as an isolated object but as a physically and spatially effective event.
Body, Material, and Scale
Born in 1953 in Chicago, Ray has lived in Los Angeles since 1981. For over five decades, he has been expanding and redefining the possibilities of sculpture. His art revolves around corporeality, spirituality, proportion, dimension, mass, and the relationship between human perception and built space.
The exhibition atmosphere of the Fridericianum makes these questions immediately experienceable. Surfaces, volumes, weight, and distance become independent artistic factors. The aesthetic experience arises not only from viewing individual works but also from the movement of the audience through the space.
An Artist Between Art History and the Present
Charles Ray's sculptures engage in an intense dialogue with historical image traditions and the contemporary world. His artistic practice combines conceptual precision with complex craft and technical production processes. After his participation in documenta 9 in 1992, Ray returns to Kassel with an institutional solo exhibition.
The Fridericianum, a central location in the history of documenta and international contemporary art, provides a particularly resonant framework for this. The curation focuses on the interplay of work, architecture, and perception, creating access to cultural education as well as to a deeper art historical analysis.
Visitor Information for the Exhibition
The exhibition contains depictions of nudity. The work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… suggests a virtual sexual act. The Fridericianum recommends viewing this work from the age of 16.
Conclusion: Sculpture as a Physical Art Experience
Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises a compelling art experience that reexamines the boundaries between object, body, and space. Those who wish to not only see contemporary sculpture but also experience its spatial impact, materiality, and art historical depth should definitely visit this exhibition live.
