Charles Ray at the Fridericianum: Sculpture as Space, Body, and Idea
From August 22, 2026, to January 3, 2027, the Fridericianum in Kassel is dedicating a comprehensive institutional solo exhibition to the American sculptor Charles Ray. The exhibition marks his first institutional solo show in Germany since his participation in documenta 9 in 1992.
Sculpture between Art History and the Present
Charles Ray, born in 1953 in Chicago and living in Los Angeles since 1981, is considered one of the significant sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries. For over five decades, he has explored the contemporary world, questions of physicality, and notions of spirituality through the means of sculpture.
His works are in an intense dialogue with art history and the genesis of art. Ray is interested not only in the finished piece but also in its production, scale, materiality, and installation. This transforms the viewing of the work into an investigation of how sculpture generates perception.
When Sculpture Consists of Space
At the center of the exhibition is an apparent contradiction: For Charles Ray, a sculpture that is embedded in a space must consist of space. His works range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons. This extreme span alters the exhibition atmosphere and directs attention to weight, volume, surface, and spatial presence.
Visitors encounter art that always considers the body of the observing person. Forms appear familiar yet simultaneously unsettling, surfaces seem precise and bodily, while the dimensions of individual works make the architecture of the Fridericianum palpable. The aesthetic experience arises in the interplay between closeness and distance, recognition and alienation.
An Exhibition for Intensive Work Observation
Charles Ray's sculptures combine artisanal precision with conceptual rigor. His art prompts viewers to slow down their gaze and reassess the relationship between object, body, and environment. Each installation derives its effect from the interplay of material, light, proportion, and architectural context.
The exhibition also includes the work School Play from 2014. The exhibition simultaneously addresses the historical conditions of sculpture and the question of how contemporary art works with traditional image forms. The Fridericianum thus creates a framework for cultural education, differentiated art mediation, and a concentrated engagement with contemporary sculpture.
Notes for the Exhibition Visit
The exhibition contains depictions of nudity. The work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… suggests a virtual sexual act and is recommended by the Fridericianum for visitors aged 16 and older. Public tours and curatorial guided tours complement the exhibition program; the costs for public tours are included in the admission fee.
The regular admission fee is 6 euros, reduced price 4 euros. Students and trainees pay 2 euros. Admission is free on Wednesdays as well as for children and teenagers up to 18 years, school classes, and students with a cultural ticket. The Fridericianum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 11 am to 6 pm, and on Thursdays until 8 pm.
Conclusion: An Outstanding Art Experience in Kassel
Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises an intense encounter with a sculpture that not only occupies space but actively shapes perception. Art historical references, bodily presence, and architectural tension combine to create an exhibition of high intellectual and sensory density. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary art, sculpture, and the aesthetic experience of spatial installation firsthand should visit this exhibition live in Kassel.
