Charles Ray at Fridericianum: Sculpture as an Intense Spatial Experience

From August 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027, the Fridericianum in Kassel will present the first institutional solo exhibition of Charles Ray in Germany. The exhibition opens a concentrated artistic experience focused on corporeality, material, scale, and space.

Sculpture between Body and Space

Charles Ray, born in 1953 in Chicago and living in Los Angeles since 1981, is considered one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries. For more than five decades, he has explored the contemporary world, art history, and fundamental questions of corporeality and spirituality through sculpture.

Ray's works deal with the genesis of art and its installation in space. His notion that a sculpture must consist of space itself connects conceptual rigor with an immediate sensual contemplation of the work. The works range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons and alter the relationship between body, movement, and architectural environment.

Art History as Living Presence

The exhibition introduces an art direction that does not perceive sculpture as a static object but as a movement of thought. Charles Ray questions historical image traditions, classic proportions, and the conditions of seeing. Materials, surfaces, forms, and scales create an exhibition atmosphere where familiar concepts of the human body and the artwork become unstable.

After participating in documenta 9 in 1992, Ray returns to Kassel with this institutional solo exhibition. The Fridericianum thus connects international contemporary art, the history of documenta, and a demanding cultural education. The curation invites visitors to experience sculpture not only visually but also physically and spatially.

Aesthetic Experience at Fridericianum

The contemplation of the works unfolds between proximity and distance, weight and lightness, presence and irritation. Visitors experience how light, spatial effects, materiality, and scale determine the perception of a sculpture. Exhibition spaces become active components of the art and reveal how closely form, architecture, and movement are connected.

The exhibition contains depictions of nudity. The work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… also suggests a virtual sexual act. The Fridericianum recommends viewing this work from the age of 16.

Visit and Practical Information

The Fridericianum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 11 AM to 6 PM, Thursdays until 8 PM. The regular admission fee is 6 euros, reduced 4 euros. Admission is free on Wednesdays and for children and youth under 18. Public tours are held regularly, and their costs are included in the admission. The museum is located at Friedrichsplatz and can be reached by public transport via the nearby Friedrichsplatz stop.

The Fridericianum is accessible with limited barriers. Museum educational programs are available for individually planned tours and workshops.

Conclusion: An Exhibition that Reimagines Space

Charles Ray at Fridericianum promises an immersive aesthetic experience between art history, body image, and contemporary sculpture. Those who want to experience how art transforms spaces and sets perception in motion should definitely visit this exhibition in Kassel in person.
