Charles Ray at the Fridericianum: Sculpture as Thinking in Space

From August 22, 2026, to January 3, 2027, the Fridericianum dedicates its first institutional solo exhibition in Germany to the American sculptor Charles Ray. After participating in documenta 9 in 1992, Ray returns to Kassel and transforms the historical spaces of the museum into an immersive art experience about body, material, scale, and perception.

When Sculpture Consists of Space

Charles Ray is considered one of the most significant sculptors of contemporary art. For over five decades, he has explored contemporary life, art history, and the conditions of seeing through the means of sculpture. His works range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons. It is precisely in this tension that his central notion unfolds: A sculpture embedded in space must consist of space itself.

The exhibition makes this seemingly contradictory idea physically tangible. Monumental forms clash with disconcerting scales, familiar figures appear simultaneously real and artificial. In the contemplation of the works, proximity and distance, surface and volume, human physicality and abstract construction shift.

Art History, Bodies, and the Present

Ray's artistic direction cannot be fitted into a simple category. His sculptures draw on art historical image traditions and combine them with a precise analysis of material, production, and installation. The artist thinks not only about sculpture but develops his works from a distinctly sculptural mode of thinking.

At the Fridericianum, visitors encounter an exhibition where the genesis of art becomes visible. The works speak of classical ideas of the figure, modern abstraction, and the question of how an object unfolds its impact in architectural space. Light, proportion, weight, and interstitial space become autonomous components of the aesthetic experience.

The Exhibition Atmosphere of the Fridericianum

The historical spaces of the Fridericianum amplify the effect of the sculptures. Between high walls and clear axes, a special spatial effect occurs in which each work redefines its environment. Visitors experience materials, forms, and surfaces not only visually but as almost physical presence.

The exhibition invites focused perception. It opens moments of wonder, irritation, and quiet reflection on physicality and spirituality. In doing so, Charles Ray connects art historical expertise with immediate sensual experience and creates a space for cultural education, where seeing becomes an active action.

A Significant Artist Returns to Kassel

Charles Ray was born in 1953 in Chicago and has lived in Los Angeles since 1981. His works have been shown internationally and shape the discussion of contemporary sculpture. The exhibition at the Fridericianum also marks his special connection to Kassel, which began with documenta 9 in 1992.

Among the works presented is School Play from 2014. The exhibition also includes representations of nudity. The work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley... suggests a virtual sexual act; the Fridericianum recommends viewing this work for ages 16 and up.

Conclusion: Experience Sculpture Live

Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises an exhibition of high physical and intellectual presence. Those wishing to experience contemporary art, sculpture, and art historical references in an extraordinary architecture will find here an art experience that profoundly changes their perspective. The direct encounter with the works offers an aesthetic experience that can only be partially replaced by photographs and texts. A visit to Kassel is worthwhile for all who want to not only view art but experience it spatially and sensorially.
