Charles Ray at the Fridericianum: Sculpture as Space and Experience
From August 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027, the Fridericianum in Kassel will host the first institutional solo exhibition of Charles Ray in Germany since his participation in documenta 9 in 1992. The exhibition is dedicated to an artist whose sculptures combine art historical memory, physical perception, and the conditions of their presentation.
When Sculpture Changes the Space
Charles Ray does not understand sculpture as an isolated object, but as a form of space. His works create a dynamic relationship between volume, weight, scale, and emptiness. Ranging from a few grams to nearly twenty tons, they develop a strong physical presence and alter the perception of the historical spaces of the Fridericianum.
The atmosphere of the exhibition arises from the dialogue between material and architecture. Smooth surfaces, precise contours, and intentional irritations draw attention to the transitions between body, object, and surroundings. Each viewing of the work becomes an aesthetic experience, questioning proximity and distance, stability and movement anew.
Art History as Living Material
Ray's work intensively engages with the history of sculpture and the genesis of art. The artist connects classical questions of figure and body with contemporary methods of industrial production, digital precision, and experimental installation. His works draw upon art historical image traditions without merely repeating them.
Charles Ray studied at the University of Iowa and at the Mason Gross School of Art at Rutgers University. Since the 1970s, he has worked with sculpture, photography, film, and performance. International solo exhibitions have taken him to, among others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. He participated in documenta 9 in Kassel in 1992.
Body, Material, and Perception
In Ray's sculptures, realistic body images, artificial surfaces, and deliberately set irritations meet. The works appear familiar and foreign at the same time. They raise questions of identity, mortality, gender, cultural imprint, and the role of the viewer. The sensual quality remains central: light glides over surfaces, volumes come to the fore, and movement through space becomes part of the installation.
The exhibition invites slow contemplation. Between monumental weight and almost immaterial precision, an artistic experience emerges that sharpens the perception of space. Visitors experience how sculpture not only represents something but also organizes perception and transforms architectural situations.
Cultural Education and Accompanying Program
The Fridericianum complements the exhibition with educational offerings, guided tours, and workshops. Tours with members of the curatorial team explore the exhibition from different perspectives. A creative workshop on body, space, traces, scales, and movements translates key themes of Charles Ray's art into personal practical experience.
The creation of the exhibition itself becomes a topic: The extraordinary dimensions of individual sculptures posed special challenges for transport, statics, doors, windows, and exhibition architecture. Thus, the accompanying program makes visible how closely curation, production, technology, and artistic idea are interconnected.
Conclusion: An Exhibition for Immediate Viewing
Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises a concentrated encounter with contemporary sculpture, art historical reflection, and impressive spatial impact. The exhibition combines physical presence with intellectual precision and opens an aesthetic experience that unfolds fully only in direct confrontation. Art enthusiasts should visit this exhibition in person to experience scale, material, and space as immediate forces.
