Charles Ray at Fridericianum: Sculpture Becomes Space

From August 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027, the Fridericianum in Kassel will present the first institutional solo exhibition of Charles Ray in Germany. The American sculptor explores art history, the creation of art, and the impact of sculptural works in space in his work.

An Exhibition Between Body, Material, and Space

Charles Ray, born in Chicago in 1953 and living in Los Angeles since 1981, is one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries. For more than five decades, he has expanded and questioned the possibilities of sculpture. His works oscillate between physical presence, art historical memory, and conceptual precision.

For Ray, if a sculpture is to be embedded in space, it must consist of space. This seemingly contradictory concept shapes the exhibition atmosphere at the Fridericianum: The works do not appear as isolated objects, but as independent spatial situations. Their dimensions range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons.

Art History as Living Material

Ray's consideration of works leads directly into central questions of contemporary art. His sculptures reference historical image traditions, the genesis of art, and the perception of the human body. The artist combines classical ideas of figure and form with industrial materials, irritating scales, and precise staging.

The exhibition makes visible how Ray shifts the boundaries between painting, sculpture, installation, and conceptual art. His art challenges perception: Familiar bodies, everyday motifs, and art historical forms appear simultaneously real, artificial, and enigmatic. Light, surface, weight, and spatial effect become independent components of the aesthetic experience.

Charles Ray and the documenta City of Kassel

After his participation in documenta 9 in 1992, Charles Ray returns to Kassel with a comprehensive institutional solo exhibition. The Fridericianum connects to the city's special relationship with international contemporary art and places Ray's sculptural practice in a significant art historical context.

Among the artist's well-known works is School Play from 2014. Ray's sculptures combine often astonishing material precision with questions of physicality, spirituality, and the role of the artwork in the present. The curation invites viewers to experience individual works from changing perspectives and to understand their own perception as part of the artistic experience.

An Artistic Experience for Curious Eyes

The exhibition addresses everyone who wants to not only view contemporary sculpture but also physically and mentally experience it. Between monumental presence and nearly weightless precision, a concentrated atmosphere arises in which forms, materials, and interspaces unfold their effect.

The Fridericianum is open during the exhibition from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 11 AM to 6 PM, with extended hours until 8 PM on Thursdays. Public tours and art mediation offerings allow for an in-depth engagement with the presented works.

Conclusion: Seeing Sculpture Anew

Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises an intense aesthetic experience between art history, body, and space. The exhibition shows how radical and sensual sculpture can be conceived today. Anyone looking to connect contemporary art, documenta history, and demanding work analysis should experience this extraordinary artistic event in Kassel live.
