Charles Ray at the Fridericianum: Sculpture between Body, Space, and Art History

The Fridericianum will host an institutional solo exhibition of Charles Ray from August 22, 2026, to January 3, 2027. The artist, born in 1953 in Chicago and living in Los Angeles, is considered one of the most significant sculptors of our time. After his participation in documenta 9 in 1992, Ray returns to Kassel and unfolds a sensory as well as art-historically precise art experience in the historic exhibition space.

When Sculpture Consists of Space

Charles Ray's works revolve around art history, the genesis of art, and the question of how a sculpture becomes present in space. His works range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons. It is precisely in this tension between weight and lightness, body and void, material and perception that a special exhibition atmosphere arises.

Ray does not understand sculpture as merely an object, but as a spatial situation. Forms, surfaces, scales, and distances structure the viewing of the works. Visitors experience how their own bodies relate to the sculptures and how architecture, light, and movement alter the meaning of a work.

Physicality, Spirituality, and the Present

For more than five decades, Charles Ray has been sculpturally engaged with the contemporary world, his own life, and notions of physicality and spirituality. His art moves between figurative representation, conceptual sculpture, and a critical engagement with the image traditions of modernity.

Famous works like School Play demonstrate Ray's interest in the human figure, artificial precision, and disconcerting familiarity. The seemingly realistic bodies and objects remain enigmatic: they evoke everyday experiences but resist quick interpretations. Thus, Ray connects aesthetic experience with art-historical reflection.

An Exhibition with Documenta History

Charles Ray's relationship with Kassel dates back to documenta 9 in 1992. The Fridericianum is now presenting an institutional solo exhibition of the artist in Germany for the first time. The exhibition thus ties into an important station of his career and simultaneously opens a concentrated look at his sculptural practice.

The curation makes visible how Ray reformulates classic questions of painting and sculpture: What makes a figure credible? When does an object become a work of art? How does the installation in space change the perception of material, scale, and surface? These questions make the exhibition a place of cultural education and intense contemplation.

Notes for Visiting the Exhibition

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 11 AM to 6 PM. On Thursdays, the opening hours are extended until 8 PM. Public tours take place regularly; the dates are announced in the event calendar of the Fridericianum and are included in the admission price.

The exhibition contains depictions of nudity. The work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… also suggests a virtual sexual act. The Fridericianum recommends viewing this work only from the age of 16.

Conclusion: Sculpture as Physical Experience

Charles Ray at the Fridericianum promises an exhibition that sharpens the gaze and unsettles familiar notions of figure, material, and space. Between monumental presence, disconcerting proximity, and art-historical precision, a sustainable art experience is created. Those wishing to connect contemporary sculpture, aesthetic experience, and cultural education should not miss this exhibition in Kassel.
