Charles Ray at the Fridericianum: Experience Sculpture as a Thinking Space

The Fridericianum in Kassel presents Charles Ray, the first institutional solo exhibition of the American sculptor in Germany. The exhibition leads to a concentrated art experience about body, material, scale, and space and will be accessible from November 4, 2026, at 11 AM.

When Sculpture Consists of Space

Charles Ray, born in 1953 in Chicago and living in Los Angeles since 1981, is among the most significant sculptors of our time. For more than five decades, he has expanded the possibilities of sculpture. His works range from a few grams to nearly twenty tons, connecting physical presence with conceptual precision.

The exhibition centers on Ray's engagement with art history, the genesis of art, and the installation in space. His sculptures do not merely occupy space but create their own spatial perception. Proportion, dimension, mass, surface, and the relationship to the human body become components of an intensive examination of the work.

Body, Material, and Aesthetic Experience

The exhibition atmosphere thrives on the tension between apparent simplicity and complex creation. Ray's works seem immediate and familiar, yet develop disorienting shifts upon longer observation. Bodies appear as concrete forms while at the same time as art historical constructions. Materials, light, and spatial effects combine into an aesthetic experience that continually reorganizes perception.

The exhibition features sculptures such as School Play, Boy with Frog, Return to the One, Clothes Pile, and Madonna and Child. Additionally, the work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… is present, which already sparked intense discussions at documenta 9 in 1992. The exhibition also makes visible the connection between Ray's artistic development and the exhibition history of Kassel.

Art History at the Fridericianum

After his participation in documenta 9, Charles Ray returns to Kassel with this comprehensive exhibition. The curation focuses on the development of his sculptural practice and on the question of how contemporary art engages with historical image traditions, bodily presence, and spirituality. The Fridericianum itself becomes an active part of the installation: architecture, pathways, and interspaces shape the perception of the works.

Visitor Information for the Exhibition

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM and Thursdays until 8 PM. Admission is 6 euros, reduced 4 euros. Students and apprentices pay 2 euros. Admission is free on Wednesdays and for children and teenagers up to 18 years old. Public tours are regularly offered and included in the admission price.

Some works contain depictions of nudity. The work Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley… suggests a virtual sexual act; the Fridericianum recommends viewing this work from the age of 16.

Charles Ray does not expect his audience with mere monumentality but with a precise investigation of what sculpture can be. Those who want to experience body, space, and art history as movable entities will find here an inspiring cultural education experience. A visit to the Fridericianum opens new perspectives on material, scale, and the sensory power of contemporary sculpture.
