HOSTLESS: When spaces preserve memories
With HOSTLESS, the Fridericianum in Kassel presents the first institutional exhibition of Mohammed Sami in Germany. The series of works focuses on interiors that point far beyond architectural studies: they appear as psychically charged places where memories, absence, and a hard-to-grasp past condense.
Painting as a storage of the unspoken
Mohammed Sami's paintings lead into spaces that feel both familiar and unsettling. Furniture, walls, and architectural details lose their mere function. They become traces of a story whose concrete events cannot be clearly named. The painting captures the moment when abstraction falters and something restless slowly emerges to the surface.
Ghostly interiors and aesthetic experience
The exhibition atmosphere arises from a peculiar tension between silence and inner movement. Sami's spaces seem like spectral containers where remnants of past events continue to resonate. Colors, shapes, and spatial displacements do not create loud dramatization, but rather a restrained, intense viewing of the works. The uncanny appears quietly, almost gropingly.
Memory, violence, and cultural education
The images open a space for reflection on questions of memory and repression. Possible experiences of violence are not presented illustratively, but conveyed through atmosphere, materiality, and composition. It is precisely this restraint that makes the works open to individual interpretations. The exhibition connects contemporary painting with a cultural education that intertwines perception, empathy, and historical reflection.
Exhibition opening and children's vernissage
The opening will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 7 PM. From 5:30 PM to 7 PM, the Fridericianum invites to the children's vernissage. Children aged 6 to 12 will explore the exhibition with the art education team, discover mysterious abandoned places, and then reflect on personal memories in the studio workshop. The children's vernissage is free of charge, and no registration is required; children participate with accompanying adults.
An international exhibition project
HOSTLESS is being developed in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent and the Moderna Museet Malmö. The exhibition positions Mohammed Sami as a significant voice in contemporary painting and makes visible how interiors become carriers of psychological and societal history.
Conclusion: An art experience between silence and unrest
Visitors can expect a concentrated aesthetic experience where spaces become landscapes of memory. HOSTLESS invites attendees to look more closely, endure uncertainty, and physically experience the hidden tension of interiors. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary painting, atmospheric image spaces, and art historically ambitious contemporary art should definitely visit this exhibition at the Fridericianum live.
