HOSTLESS: When Spaces Preserve Memories
With HOSTLESS, Fridericianum Kassel presents the first institutional exhibition of Mohammed Sami in Germany from October 3, 2026, to January 3, 2027. New paintings are at the center, where interiors become psychologically charged stages: familiar yet unsettling, quiet and full of untold history.
Interiors as Emotional Landscapes
Mohammed Sami does not paint neutral architectural studies. His spaces possess a physical presence. Walls, doors, furniture, and individual objects appear as floating carriers of meaning, referring to something absent. Painting thus opens an intermediate space between visible reality and memory.
In the exhibition atmosphere of Fridericianum, the images unfold a peculiar tension. The light appears muted, the spatial effect ambivalent. Forms seem to solidify and at the same moment withdraw again. The aesthetic experience arises from this interplay between recognizability and uncertainty.
The Uncanny in the Everyday
The paintings of Mohammed Sami revolve around memory processes, mental occurrences, and the question of how painting can capture the unpainted. Spaces become ghostly containers for experiences, whose significance cannot be clearly identified. References to possible violence or burdensome pasts do not manifest as loud shocks but as quiet, persistent irritations.
It is precisely this restraint that characterizes the art movement and the impact of the series. The horror is not staged spectacularly. It remains as a possibility within the image and challenges the viewing of the works. Viewers navigate between personal memory, art-historical interpretation, and sensory perception.
Painting Between Memory and Abstraction
Sami's visual language combines figurative painting with moments of abstraction. Objects lose their distinct function and become signs. The depicted interiors appear concrete but remain open in their significance. This creates a tension between material surface, narrative void, and psychological depth.
The curation at Fridericianum makes this ambivalence immediately experienceable. Large canvases enter into an intense dialogue with the museum spaces. The exhibition was realized in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent and the Moderna Museet Malmö. Both institutions will also present Mohammed Sami's work in the years 2027 and 2028.
Art Education for Children and Adults
On the opening day, October 2, 2026, Fridericianum invites children aged 6 to 12 and their adult companions to a children's private view from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. With impulse cards, young visitors explore mysterious, deserted places in Sami's paintings. In the studio workshop, they subsequently translate personal memories into their own artworks. The official exhibition opening begins at 7:00 PM.
Conclusion: An Art Experience Between Proximity and Unrest
HOSTLESS awaits art enthusiasts with a compelling exhibition about spaces, memory, and the limits of the representable. Mohammed Sami's painting demands no unequivocal solution but rather careful engagement. Those wishing to experience contemporary painting, psychological pictorial spaces, and cultural education in a special connection will find an extraordinary art experience at Fridericianum. A visit opens up an aesthetic experience that lingers long after.
