LIGHT TOUCHED: When Watermarks Begin to Shine at Palais Bellevue
With the exhibition LIGHT TOUCHED, Barbara Beisinghoff transforms Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a resonance space for light, paper, and language. Delicate, handmade watermark papers float before the windows, capturing daylight and connecting the interior with the outside world in a poetic installation.
An Exhibition between the Visible and the Invisible
Beisinghoff's works only reveal their effect in backlight. Filigree signs, letters, and water jet drawings emerge from the paper structure, changing with the shifting light and making the historical architecture of Palais Bellevue appear as part of the curation. The exhibition is accessible without barriers through three floors and makes the windows themselves optical and spiritual thresholds.
Watermarks as Thought Images
On the ground floor, visitors encounter the motif of the first spark of light and the Hebrew word Reshit from the Zohar, the Book of Splendor. On the first floor, a sight axis connects an ochre watermark in the fireplace room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind. The spatial effect arises from a finely tuned connection of transparency, color, architecture, and silence.
Literature, Philosophy, and Poetic Spaces
On the second floor, watermarks reference words from Christa Wolf's Cassandra. In the astronomy room, works featuring texts by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg recall the scientific history of Palais Bellevue. A display case shows the book COPPER ENGRAVINGS inhabit from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space; next to it is a white sheet with words from a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, written with water jets.
Barbara Beisinghoff: Paper as a Moving Image Space
Barbara Beisinghoff is known for color etchings, artist books, and handmade watermarks. In her art, paper transforms from a mere image carrier to an independent medium: it stores traces, lets light pass through, and makes relationships between material, language, and consciousness perceivable. Her works combine traditional printmaking with installation, book art, and a focused aesthetic experience.
Accompanying Program for the Exhibition
The program deepens the exploration of the works through talks, readings, and a leporello workshop. On October 25, Susanne Mihm-Lutz invites participants to the workshop from 2 to 5 PM; registration is required. On November 15, Marcus Angebauer and Heiko Schimmelpfeng will read prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter under the title The World in the Window. A conversation with Brigitte Zypries will conclude the accompanying program on November 29.
Conclusion: A Quiet Artistic Experience with Great Radiance
LIGHT TOUCHED opens up an exhibition experience where light not only illuminates but generates meaning. Visitors can expect transparent image spaces, literary traces, historical architecture, and an exhibition atmosphere full of subtle nuances. Those who want to experience the aesthetic encounter of paper, light, and language directly should discover this exhibition live at Palais Bellevue.
