LIGHT TOUCHED: When Paper Begins to Shine at Palais Bellevue
Barbara Beisinghoff's exhibition LIGHT TOUCHED transforms the Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a poetic resonance space of light, paper, language, and architecture. Delicate handcrafted watermark papers enter into a silent dialogue with daylight in front of the historic windows. Only in backlight do intricate signs, texts, and image spaces reveal themselves – an artistic experience between the visible and the invisible.
An Aesthetic Experience in the Change of Light
The exhibition is barrier-free and spans three floors of Palais Bellevue. Windows, spatial axes, shadows, and transparent materials connect the inside and outside into a finely composed installation art. The light changes the works throughout the day, making each viewing of the pieces a dynamic perceptual experience.
In the Sohar, the Book of Splendor, the first spark of light is also the first word. This connection of light and language forms a poetic starting point for the exhibition. Beisinghoff does not reduce paper to a mere image bearer, but transforms it into an independent medium for memory, perception, and meaning.
Watermarks Between Space, Literature, and Philosophy
On the first floor, a sight axis connects an ochre watermark in the fireplace room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. The restrained color develops an intense spatial effect in daylight, directing attention to the fine transitions between surface, transparency, and immateriality.
On the second floor, visitors encounter watermark words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra. In the astronomy room, further watermark images reference the historical use of the Palais Bellevue, which Landgrave Karl established in 1714 for astronomical studies. In a display case, the artist book Copper Engravings Inhabit from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space and a white sheet with words from a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, written with a water jet, are on display.
Barbara Beisinghoff and the Art of Paper
Barbara Beisinghoff works at the intersection of graphics, paper art, artist books, and space-related installations. Her work includes color etchings, handmade papers, watermarks, and water jet drawings. Through embedded texts, fine lines, and light-dependent structures, the paper acquires its own materiality and becomes a space of movement for signs, thoughts, and memories.
The artist studied art education and free painting and worked as an artist-in-residence in Belgium, Israel, Canada, the USA, and China. Her art combines craftsmanship with poetic research. Light, writing, and paper do not appear as separate elements but as intertwined layers of a contemporary art direction.
Accompanying Program to the Exhibition
The accompanying program extends the exhibition with discussions, literature, and cultural education. Planned events include a discussion with art historian Susanne Jakubzcyk, a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, the reading The World in the Window featuring prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter, and a conversation with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister. Registration is required for the workshop.
Conclusion: Light as a Dynamic Encounter
LIGHT TOUCHED offers a quiet, concentrated exhibition atmosphere where light, language, paper, and architecture interweave. Visitors can expect a decelerated contemplation of the works filled with delicate nuances, changing spatial effects, and poetic discoveries. Those who want to experience the aesthetic experience between the visible and the invisible firsthand should not miss this exhibition at Palais Bellevue in Kassel.
