LIGHT TOUCHED: When Watermarks Begin to Shine at Palais Bellevue

At Palais Bellevue in Kassel, Barbara Beisinghoff presents an exhibition where light, paper, language, and architecture merge into a poetic experiential space. Delicate handmade watermark papers appear before the windows and change with the incoming daylight. The exhibition is barrier-free and spans multiple rooms and three floors of the historic building.

An Art of Delicate Visibility

Barbara Beisinghoff is one of the artists who perceives paper not merely as a picture carrier but as an independent material. Her watermarks, water jet drawings, etchings, and artist books reside on the border between graphics, installation, and object art. Only in backlight do the fine structures become fully visible: The invisible gains contour, while the exhibition atmosphere remains influenced by varying nuances of light.

The Palais Bellevue as a Resonance Space

The numerous windows of Palais Bellevue form the architectural starting point of the curation. On the ground floor, two works placed before the semicircular supraporte windows reference the idea from the Sohar, the Book of Splendor, stating that the first spark of light was also the first word. The inner space and the outside world engage in a silent dialogue that visitors can experience directly in a concentrated observation of the works.

Watermarks between Literature and Philosophy

On the first floor, a sight axis connects an ochre watermark in the fireplace room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. On the second floor, words from Christa Wolf's Cassandra appear: Chaos could take shape around words like iron filings around a magnet. In the astronomy room, visitors encounter further watermark images as well as references to Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Gaston Bachelard, and Marina Tsvetaeva.

Moving Light, Layered Seeing

In the library, three levels of watermarks slowly revolve under a vaulted arch. This installation makes time perceptible as a component of the aesthetic experience. Light travels over paper, shapes overlap, and perception opens up to the smallest transitions between materiality and transparency. The art experience arises not from loud effects but from attention to delicate nuances.

Artistic Classification and Cultural Education

Beisinghoff's work connects printmaking, painting, artist books, and installation with literary and scientific thought figures. The award-winning artist has received, among others, the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg Prize for Fine Arts, the International Senefelder Prize for Lithography, and the City Printer Prize Mainz. Her works have been exhibited in museums and institutions across Germany, Europe, North America, and Asia.

Accompanying Program to the Exhibition

The program expands the exhibition with discussions, a leporello workshop, readings, and cultural policy perspectives. On October 25, from 2 to 5 PM, there will be a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz; participation is possible upon registration. On November 15, Marcus Angebauer and Heiko Schimmelpfeng will read prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter under the title The World in the Window. On November 29, a conversation will follow with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister.

Conclusion: A Quiet, Intense Art Experience

LIGHT TOUCHED invites visitors to slow down perception and explore the interplay between light, paper, language, and space. The exhibition opens up an aesthetic experience between art history, literature, and cultural education. Those who wish to see how a barely visible sign transforms into a moving image should experience this poetic installation live at Palais Bellevue.
