LIGHT TOUCHED: When Watermarks Begin to Shine in Palais Bellevue

Barbara Beisinghoff's exhibition LIGHT TOUCHED transforms the Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a poetic resonance space of light, paper, language, and architecture. Delicate handmade watermark papers enter into a silent dialogue with daylight in front of the historic windows, connecting the interior and the outside world.

An Aesthetic Experience Between the Visible and Invisible

The filigree paper works unfold their effect in backlight. Brightness, transparency, and shadows change the perception of the works with each step through the rooms. The paper appears not merely as a picture carrier, but as an independent medium for materiality, writing, color, and light.

A central reference point of the exhibition is the Sohar, the Book of Splendor. The idea that the first spark of light simultaneously brings forth the first word leads directly to the watermark images in front of the semicircular supraporte windows on the ground floor. Writing is not only read here but perceived as a visual and physically tangible trace.

Watermarks as a Poetic Language of Images

Across three floors, a carefully curated visual and spatial dramaturgy unfolds. On the first floor, a sight axis connects an ochre-colored watermark in the living room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. Color, distance, and daylight create a quiet tension between closeness and distance.

On the second floor, visitors encounter watermark words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra. In the astronomy room, further works engage with thoughts from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. A display case with the artist book KUPFERSTICHE BEWOHNEN from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space, as well as a white sheet with a water-jet written poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, expand the exhibition into literary and philosophical dimensions.

Architecture as a Component of the Installation

The Palais Bellevue itself becomes part of the installation in LIGHT TOUCHED. Under the vaulted arch of the library, three levels of watermarks slowly rotate above each other. The movement remains restrained and precisely for that reason impactful: light, paper, and space fall into a fragile balance.

The historical architecture with its numerous windows forms the atmospheric starting point of the exhibition. Inside and outside, surface and depth, visibility and concealment appear as interconnected states. The observation of the works thus becomes a concentrated form of cultural education and opens new accesses to paper art, installation, and the poetic power of material.

Accompanying Program with Discussion, Workshop, and Reading

The accompanying program deepens the art historical and literary engagement with the exhibition. Conversations with art historian Susanne Jakubzcyk and Brigitte Zypries, a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, as well as the reading The World in the Window with prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter set their own accents.

The leporello workshop on October 25th takes place from 2 to 5 PM and requires prior registration. The reading on November 15th begins at 11 AM. Another conversation appointment with Brigitte Zypries is planned for November 29th at 11:30 AM.

Conclusion: Light as an Invitation to Slowed Perception

LIGHT TOUCHED invites art enthusiasts to a sensory art experience between paper art, installation, literature, and historical architecture. The barrier-free exhibition spanning three floors sharpens the perception of delicate nuances and demonstrates how intensely light can touch our perception. Those seeking a poetic aesthetic experience and cultural enrichment should definitely experience Barbara Beisinghoff's exhibition at Palais Bellevue live.
