LIGHT TOUCHED: When Paper Begins to Shine in Palais Bellevue
Barbara Beisinghoff's exhibition LIGHT TOUCHED transforms the historic Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a poetic resonance space for light, paper, and language. Delicate handmade watermark papers float in front of the windows, connecting inside and outside, and unfold their effects in the changing backlight. The exhibition can be seen from August 27, 2026, to January 2, 2027, offering a quiet, penetrating artistic experience between visible form and immaterial radiance.
Watermarks between Interior and Exterior
The filigree paper works respond sensitively to the natural lighting of Palais Bellevue. Only in the backlight do signs, letters, and image spaces emerge. Light becomes not just a means of illumination but an active component of the installation. The historical architecture gains a new perception level: windows, spatial axes, shadows, and transparent materials combine to create a finely composed exhibition atmosphere.
A Tour through Three Floors
The barrier-free accessible exhibition leads through three floors of Palais Bellevue. Already in the hall on the ground floor, two works in front of the semi-circular transom windows refer to the Sohar, the Book of Splendor. The first spark of light appears there simultaneously as the first word, Reschit. The watermarks connect spiritual tradition, writing, and aesthetic experience into an open examination of the work.
On the first floor, a precise visual axis emerges between the ochre watermark in the fireplace room and the white sheet Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. The color tension between warm ochre and bright white alters the spatial effect and directs the gaze to the subtle transitions between materiality, transparency, and perception.
Literature Becomes Light and Matter
On the second floor, texts by Christa Wolf, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, and Marina Tsvetaeva enter into a dialogue with the paper works. The motif of chaos, which organizes itself like iron filings around a magnet, becomes visible as a watermark. In the astronomy room, works in the north and east windows open the view to sky observation, knowledge, and language.
A display case with the book OCCUPYING ETCHINGS from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space expands the exhibition with an art-theoretical dimension. A white sheet with words from a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, written with a waterjet, makes the creation process itself the subject. Under the arch of the library, three levels of watermarks slowly rotate over each other, creating a moving, almost floating installation.
Barbara Beisinghoff and the Art of Paper
Barbara Beisinghoff works with paper, copper, etching, artist's books, and installations. Her art explores the relationship between material, language, light, and space. Watermarks arise through interventions in the papermaking screen, through incorporated materials, embossed or printed texts, as well as through waterjet drawings. Thus, craftsmanship precision, poetic openness, and art historical reflection connect.
The exhibition is in the tradition of contemporary paper art and expands it with a space-related, light-sensitive form of curation. Palais Bellevue becomes not merely an exhibition venue but an active partner of the works. Every change in daylight alters the perception of the installation and makes the visit an individual aesthetic experience.
Discussions, Reading, and Workshop
Accompanying the exhibition, discussions, a reading, and a leporello workshop deepen the cultural education. An art historical conversation with Susanne Jakubzcyk, a workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, as well as the reading The World in the Window with prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter expand the work examination with historical, literary, and social perspectives. The conclusion will be a conversation with Brigitte Zypries, Federal Minister a.D.
Conclusion: A Quiet Artistic Experience with Great Radiance
LIGHT TOUCHED awaits art enthusiasts as a sensual encounter with light, paper, language, and historical architecture. The exhibition shows how gossamer watermarks create a dynamic image space and how the invisible becomes perceptible through the aesthetic experience. Those who wish to experience the fine nuances between transparency, writing, and space themselves should definitely visit this exhibition live at Palais Bellevue.
