LIGHT TOUCHES: When paper begins to glow at Palais Bellevue

With the exhibition LIGHT TOUCHES, Barbara Beisinghoff transforms the Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a poetic resonance space of light, paper, and language. Delicate, handmade wove paper watermarks engage in a quiet dialogue with daylight in front of the historic windows. Only in backlight do intricate signs, texts, and image spaces reveal themselves.

An aesthetic experience between the visible and the invisible

The exhibition provides barrier-free access through three floors of Palais Bellevue. The transparent paper works connect inside and outside and change their effects with the changing light. The historic building itself becomes part of the installation: windows, spatial axes, shadows, and materiality merge into a finely composed exhibition atmosphere.

In Sohar, the book of splendor, the first spark of light is also considered the first word. This connection of light and language forms a poetic starting point for the examination of the works. In Barbara Beisinghoff's works, paper does not become a mere carrier of images, but an independent medium for perception, memory, and movement.

Watermarks, literature, and spatial effects

On the first floor, a sight axis connects an ochre-colored watermark in the parlor with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. The subtle colors develop an intense spatial effect in daylight, directing the gaze to the fine transitions between surface, transparency, and immateriality.

On the second floor, visitors encounter watermark words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra. In the astronomy room, further watermark images reference the historical use of Palais Bellevue, which Landgrave Karl built in 1714 for astronomical studies. A display case shows the artist's book Kupferstiche bewohnen from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space as well as a white sheet with words from a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, written with water jets.

Barbara Beisinghoff and the art of paper

Barbara Beisinghoff's artistic work includes color etchings, artist books, handmade papers, watermarks, and installations. Her art operates at the intersection of graphic art, paper art, and spatial installation. Lines, fibers, light signs, and inscribed texts reveal an art direction where the material itself becomes a bearer of poetic and philosophical significance.

The artist has participated in numerous international exhibitions. Her works are held in public collections and museums in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. In Kassel, she connects her long-standing engagement with paper, writing, and light with the unique architecture of Palais Bellevue.

Accompanying program for the exhibition

The accompanying program expands the exhibition with discussions, literature, and practical cultural education. Announced events include a conversation with art historian Susanne Jakubzcyk, a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, the reading The World in the Window featuring prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter, and a discussion with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister. Registration is required for the workshop.

Conclusion: Light as a dynamic encounter

LIGHT TOUCHES offers a silent, focused art experience where light, language, paper, and architecture interweave. The exhibition invites a decelerated contemplation of the works and makes tangible how a multifaceted aesthetic experience emerges from fragile material. Those who want to directly experience the nuances between the visible and the invisible should definitely visit this exhibition live at Palais Bellevue in Kassel.
