LIGHT TOUCHES: When Paper Begins to Glow in Backlight
At Palais Bellevue in Kassel, Barbara Beisinghoff's exhibition LIGHT TOUCHES unfolds a poetic art experience of light, handmade paper, and language. Delicate watermark papers engage in a quiet dialogue with daylight at the historic windows, connecting interior space and the outside world.
An Aesthetic Experience Between the Visible and the Invisible
The filigree paper works reveal their signs and spaces only in backlight. Brightness, transparency, and shadows change with the position of the sun. This creates a dynamic exhibition atmosphere in which the architecture of Palais Bellevue itself becomes part of the installation.
Watermarks as Images, Words, and Thought Spaces
At the center are watermark works that span three floors. In the hall, two pieces before the semi-circular supraporte windows reference the first spark of light and the first word, Reschit, from the Sohar, the Book of Splendor. Observing the works connects visual perception with literary and philosophical impulses.
Literature Meets Paper Art
On the first floor, a sightline forms between an ochre-colored watermark in the fireplace room and the white work Light of the eye and of the mind. On the second floor, visitors encounter texts from Christa Wolf's Kassandra and thoughts from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. A showcase presents the book ENGRAVINGS INHABIT from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space as well as a white sheet with words of a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, written with a water jet.
Space, Movement, and Cultural Education
Under the vaulted arch of the library, three levels of watermarks slowly rotate above each other. The installation makes visible how closely light, material, language, and spatial perception are interconnected. A printed tour flyer accompanies the exhibition, which is barrier-free through three floors of Palais Bellevue.
Accompanying Program for the Exhibition
The supporting program deepens the engagement with art, literature, and space. Talks are planned with Susanne Jakubzcyk and Brigitte Zypries, a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, as well as a reading by Marcus Angebauer and Heiko Schimmelpfeng with prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter. Registration is required for the workshop.
Conclusion: Light as a Gentle Touch
LIGHT TOUCHES welcomes art enthusiasts as a concentrated, sensual observation of works between paper art, installation, literature, and historical architecture. The exhibition invites one to slow down their gaze and perceive the fine nuances between the visible and the invisible. Anyone seeking a poetic aesthetic experience and cultural education in a special spatial effect should definitely experience this exhibition live at Palais Bellevue.
