LIGHT TOUCHES: When paper begins to glow against the light
In Palais Bellevue in Kassel, Barbara Beisinghoff transforms light, paper, and language into a poetic art experience. Her delicate, handmade watermark papers enter into a silent dialogue with daylight in front of the historic windows, connecting the interior and the outside world.
An aesthetic experience between the visible and the invisible
The exhibition is barrier-free and guides visitors through three floors of Palais Bellevue. Only in backlight do the transparent paper works reveal filigree signs, words, and image spaces. Brightness, shadows, and changing light angles alter the perception of the works and make the exhibition atmosphere a dynamic component of the installation.
In the Sohar, the Book of Radiance, the first spark of light is also considered the first word. This connection between light and language forms a poetic starting point for the examination of the works. Beisinghoff understands paper not just as a mere bearer of images but as an independent medium for perception, memory, and movement.
Watermarks and literary resonances
On the first floor, a visual axis connects an ochre-colored watermark in the drawing room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. The restrained colors develop an intense spatial effect in daylight, directing the gaze towards the fine transitions between surface, transparency, and immateriality.
On the second floor, visitors encounter watermark words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra. In the astronomy room, further works take up thoughts from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. A display case shows the artist's book Etchings Inhabit from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space as well as a white sheet with a poem written in water jets by Marina Tsvetaeva.
Space, movement, and material
Under the arch of the library, three levels of watermarks slowly rotate over each other. Light travels across the paper surfaces, shapes shift, text appears and disappears again. This installation makes the aesthetic experience physically tangible: Palais Bellevue becomes a resonant space for transparency, movement, and silence.
Barbara Beisinghoff's artistic practice includes painting, color etching, artist books, handmade papers, watermarks, and installations. Her works connect art historical questions about the bearer of images with contemporary discussions about language, space, and perception. The curation integrates the historic windows and the architecture of Palais Bellevue directly into the examination of the works.
Events related to the exhibition
The accompanying program deepens cultural education and opens different accesses to the exhibition. Planned are a conversation with art historian Susanne Jakubzcyk, a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, a reading titled The World in the Window featuring prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter, as well as a conversation with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister. Registration is required for the workshop.
Conclusion: A quiet art experience with great radiance
LIGHT TOUCHES invites art enthusiasts as a finely composed connection of paper art, light installation, literature, and historic architecture. Those who engage with the filigree nuances between the visible and the invisible will experience an exhibition that slows down the gaze and expands perception. A visit to Palais Bellevue enriches culturally, sensually, and sustainably.
