LIGHT TOUCHES: When Paper Begins to Shine in Palais Bellevue
The exhibition LIGHT TOUCHES by Barbara Beisinghoff transforms the historic Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a poetic resonant space of light, paper, and language. Delicate, handcrafted watermark papers enter into a silent dialogue with daylight at the windows, connecting the interior and the outside world.
An Aesthetic Experience Between the Visible and the Invisible
Only in backlight do the filigree works reveal their signs, texts, and visual spaces. Light penetrates the gossamer-thin parts of the paper, drawing changing contours and altering the exhibition atmosphere throughout the day. The Palais Bellevue itself becomes part of the installation: windows, spatial axes, shadows, and materiality merge into a finely composed consideration of the work.
A poetic starting point of the exhibition lies in Sohar, the Book of Splendor. There, the first spark of light is also considered the first word. In Beisinghoff's art, paper becomes not just a mere image carrier but an independent medium for perception, memory, and movement.
Watermarks, Literature and Spatial Effect
On the first floor, a line of sight connects an ochre-colored watermark in the fireplace room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room. The understated color palette directs the gaze toward the fine transitions between surface, transparency, and immateriality.
On the second floor, visitors encounter watermark words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra. In the astronomy room, further watermark images reference the history of Palais Bellevue, established by Landgrave Karl in 1714 for astronomical studies. A showcase displays the artist's book Etchings Inhabit from Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space as well as a white sheet containing lines from a poem by Marina Tsvetayeva, written with a water jet.
Barbara Beisinghoff and the Art of Paper
Barbara Beisinghoff's artistic work encompasses color etchings, artist books, handmade papers, watermarks, and site-specific installations. Her art operates at the intersection of graphics, paper art, and poetic installation. Lines, fibers, light signs, and inscribed texts open up an art form where the material itself becomes a bearer of philosophical and literary significance.
The artist has presented her works in numerous international exhibitions. Her resume includes exhibitions at the Klingspor Museum Offenbach, the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center in New York, and at Palais Bellevue Kassel. In LIGHT TOUCHES, she combines her long-standing engagement with paper, writing, and light with the unique architecture of Palais Bellevue.
Guided Tours and Cultural Education
The exhibition is barrier-free and leads through several rooms on three floors. A printed tour flyer accompanies visitors through the presentation. Discussions, a reading, and a leporello workshop expand the art experience with art historical, literary, and practical perspectives.
The accompanying program includes a conversation with art historian Susanne Jakubzcyk, a leporello workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz, the reading The World in the Window featuring prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter, as well as a discussion with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister. Registration is required for the workshop.
Conclusion: Light as a Moving Encounter
LIGHT TOUCHES offers a quiet, focused art experience where light, language, paper, and architecture intertwine. The exhibition invites a decelerated contemplation of the works and conveys how from gossamer material, a multifaceted aesthetic experience arises. Those who want to directly experience the nuances between the visible and the invisible should not miss this exhibition at Palais Bellevue in Kassel.
