LIGHT TOUCHES: When paper begins to glow in backlight

At Palais Bellevue in Kassel, Barbara Beisinghoff unfolds a quiet, poetic art experience between light, paper, language, and historical architecture. Delicate handmade watermark papers enter into an intense dialogue with the outside space in front of the windows. The changing backlight makes fragile signs, words, and image spaces visible.

An exhibition between the visible and the invisible

The exhibition offers barrier-free access through three floors of Palais Bellevue. The historic building, whose numerous windows once served the astronomical studies of Landgrave Karl, becomes part of the curation. Light appears here not merely as illumination, but as a moving artistic material.

On the ground floor, visitors encounter watermarks with the term Reschit. In the Sohar, the Book of Splendor, this first spark of light also denotes the first word. The examination of the works connects visual perception, religious tradition, and the cultural history of writing.

Watermarks as fragile image spaces

On the first floor, a visual axis is created between an ochre-colored watermark in the fireplace room and the white work Light of the eye and of the mind. Color, transparency, and spatial effect change with the daylight. The paper works open the interior to the surroundings and allow the boundary between image surface and architecture to become permeable.

On the second floor, additional watermarks reference words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra. In the astronomy room, works appear with text references to Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. A showcase complements the installation with the book Copper Engravings Inhabit from Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space as well as a white sheet on which words from a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva are written with water jets.

Barbara Beisinghoff: Paper, Printmaking, and Installation

Barbara Beisinghoff's artistic practice connects handmade papers, watermarks, etching, artists' books, and installation. Paper is thereby not just a neutral image carrier, but an independent medium: it stores traces, allows light to pass through, and makes relationships between material, language, memory, and consciousness tangible.

Under the vaulted arch of the library, three levels of watermarks slowly rotate over one another. This kinetic installation translates the aesthetic experience of motion into an almost meditative form. Shapes and letters appear, fade, and return with changed intensity.

Cultural Education and Accompanying Program

A printed tour flyer accompanies the exhibition through the rooms of Palais Bellevue. The accompanying program deepens the examination of the works through discussions, readings, and a leporello workshop. On October 25, a workshop with Susanne Mihm-Lutz takes place from 2 to 5 PM; participation is by registration at mihmlutz@uni-kassel.de.

Other events include a discussion with art historian Susanne Jakubzcyk, the reading The World in the Window featuring prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter, as well as a conversation with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister. In this way, the exhibition connects visual arts with literature, art history, and social reflection.

Conclusion: A quiet art experience with great radiance

LIGHT TOUCHES invites visitors to take a closer look and perceive the delicate nuances between the visible and the invisible. Visitors can expect a concentrated exhibition atmosphere of light, paper, language, and space. Those seeking a poetic installation, stimulating art historical examination, and a lasting aesthetic experience should definitely see this exhibition live at Palais Bellevue.
