LIGHT TOUCHES: When Watermarks Start to Shine in Palais Bellevue
Barbara Beisinghoff's exhibition LIGHT TOUCHES transforms the historic Palais Bellevue in Kassel into a poetic resonance space of light, paper, and language. Delicate, handmade watermark papers engage in a silent dialogue with daylight before the windows, connecting the interior and exterior. Only in backlight do filigree signs, words, and visual spaces become visible – an artistic experience between materiality, perception, and spiritual imagination.
An Aesthetic Experience Between the Visible and Invisible
The exhibition is accessible without barriers through several rooms on three floors. The Palais Bellevue itself becomes part of the installation: windows, spatial axes, shadows, and light create a finely composed exhibition atmosphere. In the Sohar, the book of splendor, the first spark of light simultaneously represents the first word. This connection of light, language, and creation forms a central conceptual resonance space for the contemplation of the work.
Watermarks as Poetic Visual Language
On the ground floor, visitors encounter the watermarks before the semicircular supraporte windows. The Hebrew word Reschit refers to the beginning, making the paper works silent thresholds between writing, image, and light. On the first floor, a line of sight connects an ochre-colored watermark in the fireplace room with the white work Light of the eye and of the mind in the opposite room.
Literature, Philosophy, and Art in Dialogue
On the second floor, further watermark words from Christa Wolf's Kassandra appear. The sentence about chaos, which can take on structure around words, directs perception to the subtle orders within the transparent paper works. In the Astronomy Room, texts by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg are added. A showcase presents the book KUPFERSTICHE BEWOHNEN from Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space as well as a white sheet with verses by Marina Tsvetaeva, written with a water jet.
Spatial Effects and Moving Light
Under the arch of the library, three layers of watermarks slowly revolve over one another. The installation makes light an experience as a moving, never fully definable phenomenon. Paper becomes a projection surface, the historical space a perception instrument. Beisinghoff's art thus moves between installation, artist's book, paper art, and conceptual drawing.
Accompanying Program for the Exhibition
The accompanying program deepens cultural education and opens different approaches to the exhibition. Planned are discussions, a leporello workshop, and a reading of prose and letters from Rosa Luxemburg to James Salter. Another discussion will take place with Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister. Registration is required for the workshop.
Conclusion: Light as Immediate Encounter
LIGHT TOUCHES invites a slowed-down contemplation of the works, in which light, paper, language, and architecture form a fragile unity. Visitors can expect a sensual and at the same time art-historically stimulating exhibition that does not explain the invisible but makes it experienceable. Those who want to experience the nuances between shadow, transparency, and meaning should definitely visit this special art experience at Palais Bellevue live.
