Live different! at Wesertor: How communal living reshapes the city

What does a city district look like that connects social proximity, ecological responsibility, and urban density? The exhibition Live different! at Wesertor – Rethinking Community presents the competition entries for the NHW Award 2026 from October 29 to November 5, 2026, in the foyer of the ASL new building at the University of Kassel.

Urban development as a societal task

The focus is on forward-looking models of dense and closely networked community-oriented living. Students from the Department 06 of Architecture, Urban Planning, and Landscape Planning examine the Kassel district of Wesertor between Franzgraben and Fuldaaue and develop urban planning, landscape planning, and architectural concepts for the city of tomorrow.

A district between sealing and potential

The competition area is located northeast of the Kassel city center and in close proximity to the university. Large-scale retail and commercial halls, extensive parking facilities, and a high degree of sealing currently characterize the area. At the same time, the location offers significant open space and development potential between Ysenburgstraße, Franzgraben, Schützenstraße, and Fuldaaue.

Architecture, Landscape, and Social Infrastructure

The exhibited works connect architecture with urban planning, landscape planning, and infrastructure. Their designs inquire about new forms of living, about communally usable spaces, and about a resilient district structure. The examination of the works makes visible how concrete spatial visions emerge from urban analyses: through buildings, open spaces, paths, communal facilities, and a new relationship between living and landscape.

Exhibition and award ceremony at the ASL new building

The presentation of the competition entries takes place in the foyer of the ASL new building. The award ceremony with subsequent opening reception is scheduled for October 29, 2026, at 6 p.m. on the ground floor in rooms 0105 and 0106. The NHW Award 2026 is awarded by Department 06 of the University of Kassel in collaboration with the Nassauische Heimstätte | Wohnstadt corporate group and is organized by the Department of Design and Sustainable Construction.

Art experience between model, plan, and vision

The exhibition offers an aesthetic experience beyond classical art forms. Models, plans, and conceptual representations transform urban research into an illustrative exhibition language. Lines, scales, materiality, and spatial diagrams invite reflection on the future of communal living. Thus, the exhibition becomes a platform for cultural education and an invitation to view the city as a shapable social space.

Conclusion: Live different! at Wesertor shows how engaged young planners develop new answers to housing shortages, land consumption, and societal fragmentation. Visitors will experience a focused display of future-oriented architecture and urban planning. A visit to the ASL new building is worthwhile for anyone eager to discover Kassel, sustainable construction, and the urban society of tomorrow from a new perspective.
