What does a community-oriented Wesertor of the future look like?
The exhibition Live differently! at Wesertor – Rethinking Community presents the competition entries for the NHW Award 2026 in the foyer of the ASL building at the University of Kassel. Students from architecture, urban planning, and landscape planning are designing models for a vibrant, green, and tightly-knit urban quarter between Franzgraben and Fuldaaue.
City as a shared living space
At the center is an urban space characterized today by large retail and commercial halls, oversized parking facilities, and a high degree of sealing. The exhibition makes visible how urban planning, landscape architecture, infrastructure, and building construction can create new connections: between living and working, public space and nature, individual quality of life and social responsibility.
Designs for a green and resilient quarter
The presented works examine Wesertor as a development area for dense, socially productive, and climate-friendly coexistence. Open spaces, greening, communal uses, and new housing options combine to form spatial scenarios that better integrate the quarter into the Kassel urban structure.
Architecture as cultural education
The examination of the works provides an illustrative access to current issues in urban development. Models, plans, and conceptual representations show how architectural decisions influence spatial effects, movement flows, and neighborhood. The art experience of this exhibition arises less from individual autonomous artworks and more from the aesthetic experience of urban future visions and the precise curation of student designs.
Award-winning ideas for Kassel
The NHW Award 2026 was announced by the Department 06 Architecture – Urban Planning – Landscape Planning of the University of Kassel in collaboration with the Nassauische Heimstätte | Wohnstadt Group and organized by the Department of Design and Sustainable Building. The exhibition showcases 20 submitted works from 122 students. The first prize was awarded to the team Sophie Schadow, Sophia Dreysse, Thorben Gille, and Jakob Paulsen for their design From Water to Courtyard, which integrates urban planning, architecture, open space design, and climate adaptation.
Conclusion: The future becomes visible
Live differently! invites you to view Kassel from the perspective of possible futures. Visitors can expect an inspiring exhibition on sustainable architecture, social urban development, and the power of communal spaces. For those who want to understand how a disconnected, heavily sealed area can transform into a well-networked quarter with more quality of life, this exhibition offers a stimulating art experience at the intersection of planning, research, and social vision.
