What will the public welfare-oriented neighborhood of the future look like?

The exhibition Live differently! at Wesertor – Rethinking Community. presents the competition entries for the NHW Award 2026 in the foyer of the ASL new building at the University of Kassel. From October 29 to November 5, 2026, architectural designs, urban planning concepts, and landscape planning visions transform into a vivid forum for the future of the Kassel district of Wesertor.

City as a shared living space

At the center is a demanding spatial scenario between Franzgraben and Fuldaaue. The competition area is located northeast of Kassel's city center and near the university. Large retail and commercial halls, oversized parking facilities, and a high degree of sealing currently characterize the place. The exhibited works therefore inquire into new forms of coexistence: denser, more interconnected, socially just, and more connected with open spaces.

Architecture, landscape, and social infrastructure

The student contributions connect urban planning, landscape planning, infrastructure, and building construction. Their models conceptualize densely populated urban neighborhoods not just as structural systems, but as social fabrics. Paths, squares, green spaces, communal facilities, and housing forms appear as interconnected elements of a resilient city.

The examination of the works provides insights into design methods: scale, spatial edges, access, open space, and usage become tools for a future-oriented curation of urban space. The direct comparison of the competition entries vividly illustrates how diverse communal living can be articulated architecturally and spatially.

An exhibition space for cultural education

The foyer of the ASL new building will become an open learning and discussion landscape. The exhibition conveys art and architecture-related education by making complex questions of urban development accessible through plans, models, and presentations. Visitors encounter an exhibition where aesthetic experience and social responsibility are closely intertwined.

The NHW Award 2026 is jointly awarded by the Department 06 Architecture – Urban Planning – Landscape Planning of the University of Kassel and the Nassauische Heimstätte | Living City group, organized by the Department of Design and Sustainable Building. The award ceremony with subsequent vernissage will take place on October 29, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the ASL new building.

Conclusion: The future becomes spatially conceivable

Live differently! at Wesertor invites you to reconsider the city as a shaped living space. The exhibition combines architectural precision with social vision and makes it tangible how concrete ideas for a public welfare-oriented future emerge from designs. Those who want to understand Kassel, sustainable urban development, and contemporary architecture will find an inspiring art experience between model, space, and social utopia here.
