Mohammed Sami: HOSTLESS – Rooms Full of Memory at Fridericianum
With HOSTLESS, the Fridericianum in Kassel will showcase the first institutional exhibition of Mohammed Sami in Germany starting October 3, 2026. At the center are eleven monumental paintings that make interiors experientially psychological places of memory. The exhibition invites a concentrated viewing of the works, in which architecture, absence, and the past appear inextricably connected.
Interiors Between Painting and Memory
Mohammed Sami, born in 1984 in Baghdad and living in London, develops in his new series of works a painting of quiet unease. His spaces initially appear as interiors or architectural studies, but quickly unfold an independent emotional and physical presence. Doors, furniture, walls, and scattered items become carriers of meaning, whose concrete function eludes a definitive interpretation.
The paintings preserve traces of events without fully narrating them. This creates a state of suspension in the exhibition atmosphere: something seems to have happened, yet the images refuse direct representation of horror. Sami works with allusion, gaps, and a precisely set unease that slowly transfers to the viewers.
The Aesthetics of Absence
The large-scale painting of HOSTLESS transforms the Fridericianum into a structure of psychological spaces. The absence of human figures becomes the central motif. What remains are spaces, materials, and objects—silent witnesses of a past that cannot be fully named.
Sami's artistic direction combines figurative painting with an atmospheric, almost dream-like visual language. Abstraction comes to a halt as familiar forms lose their safety. Colors, spatial edges, and surfaces create a tension between recognition and alienation. The art experience thrives not on loud presentation but on the slow condensation of visual cues.
Art Historical Classification and Curating
The exhibition examines how painting can make memory processes visible. The painting appears as an index of the absent, the withheld, and that which lies beyond direct representation. In doing so, Mohammed Sami connects to central questions of contemporary painting: How can traumatic experiences be represented without simplifying them? What role do spaces play in storing personal and collective memory?
HOSTLESS is developed in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent and the Moderna Museet Malmö. The institutional collaboration emphasizes the international significance of Sami's painting and simultaneously opens perspectives for cultural education, discussions about memory, and a deepened aesthetic experience.
Art Education for Young Visitors
On the opening day, October 2, 2026, there will be a children's preview from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Children aged six to twelve can explore the exhibition together with the education team and subsequently engage creatively with personal memories in the studio workshop. Participation is free; no registration is required. Children must attend the event accompanied by adults.
Conclusion: A Quiet, Compelling Art Experience
Mohammed Sami's HOSTLESS awaits visitors with a painting that not only depicts spaces but makes them tangible as carriers of memory, loss, and unspoken stories. The exhibition does not demand quick interpretation but rather an open viewing of the works. Those willing to engage with the subtle shifts of light, form, materiality, and spatial effect will experience an intense encounter with contemporary art at the Fridericianum. A visit enriches cultural education and opens up a sustainable aesthetic experience.
