HOSTLESS at Fridericianum: Rooms Full of Memory
With HOSTLESS, the Fridericianum in Kassel presents the first institutional exhibition of Mohammed Sami in Germany. The exhibition will be on view from October 3, 2026, to January 3, 2027, and leads into a contemporary painting where empty interiors become psychologically charged places.
Interiors Between Architecture and Memory
Mohammed Sami, born in 1984 in Baghdad and living in London, paints spaces where no people appear, yet their traces remain ever-present. Walls, windows, furniture, and individual objects become carriers of meaning. The paintings are much more than architectural studies: they condense memory, absence, and a quiet, elusive unease.
A Painting of Quiet Disquiet
Sami's images unfold their effect not through dramatic gestures but through shifts of light, color, form, and spatial perception. Familiar interiors tip into the ghostly. Something seems to linger in them without being clearly articulable. The painting preserves traces of possible events and simultaneously opens a space for contemplation of the works.
The Image as a Place of the Unspeakable
In HOSTLESS, painting becomes a practice of memory. The spaces feel physically present yet simultaneously removed. They appear as vessels of mental processes in which abstraction, objecthood, and psychological perception intertwine. It is precisely this tension that makes the exhibition art-historically and aesthetically remarkable.
Curating and Cultural Education
The exhibition is created in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent and Moderna Museet Malmö. On the opening day, October 2, 2026, the Fridericianum also invited children from six to twelve years old to a children's vernissage. Together with the educational team, the young visitors explored mysterious places in Sami's images and translated personal memories into their own artworks.
Conclusion: An Art Experience Between Intimacy and Strangeness
HOSTLESS invites art enthusiasts with an immersive exhibition about spaces, memory, and the limits of the representable. Those who engage in slow contemplation of the works will experience a unique aesthetic experience between painting, absence, and cultural memory. The exhibition deserves an immediate visit to the original at the Fridericianum.
