Resonance Spaces: Memory becomes visible at the Neue Galerie Kassel
The exhibition Resonance Spaces. documenta Art and Other New Acquisitions celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Neue Galerie and invites a profound exploration of artwork related to history, memory, and contemporary art. From March 6, 2026, to January 24, 2027, a multifaceted art experience unfolds in the museum with large-scale installations, films, and objects.
Art between Archive, Space, and Memory
The exhibition connects international positions of modern and contemporary art with the documenta legacy of Kassel. Since its opening in 1976, the Neue Galerie has purposefully expanded its collection to include global artistic perspectives and new media. In Resonance Spaces, this development is experienced as a vibrant web of personal memories, collective history, and cultural transmission.
Large-Scale Installations with Strong Spatial Impact
The presented works shape the atmosphere of the exhibition through their physical presence. Installations open new perspectives, films expand the viewing of the artwork to include time and movement, while objects appear as material traces of experience and memory. Light, material, image, and space enter into a dynamic dialogue, creating an aesthetic experience that goes far beyond mere observation.
Four Artistic Perspectives on History
Pınar Öğrenci initiates processes of collaborative memory with her film Aşît. Jürgen O. Olbrich archives discarded photographic material and makes visible how private images become fragmentary documents of a society. Michal Heiman questions in her works the structures of psychological tests and the power of normative images. Ute Lindner's Exposure Times reflects on temporal flows and image traditions of painting displays.
Documenta Tradition and Cultural Education
The Neue Galerie is closely related to the documenta and presents art as a critical memory of a city and its international exhibition history. Guided tours and educational offerings deepen access to the works. For school classes, among other things, a thematic walking tour on memories and a modeling workshop on Rasad – Food Objects are offered.
Conclusion: A Museum as a Resonator
Resonance Spaces promises a concentrated art experience for all who wish to engage with contemporary art, documenta history, and the aesthetic power of memory. The exhibition connects sensory spatial impact with art historical reflection and makes the Neue Galerie a resonator of personal and societal history. A visit enriches the perspective on art, collection, and cultural memory sustainably.
