Resonance Spaces: Memory becomes visible at the Neue Galerie Kassel
The exhibition Resonance Spaces. Documenta Art and Other Recent Acquisitions transforms the Neue Galerie Kassel into a multifaceted resonance body for history, present, and personal memory in honor of its 50th anniversary. From March 6, 2026, to January 24, 2027, visitors will encounter large-scale installations, films, and objects that create an intense exhibition atmosphere and illustrate the development of the collection since 1976.
A collection in dialogue with documenta
The Neue Galerie was opened in 1976 as a joint location for municipal and state art collections. Its close connection to documenta continues to shape its curatorial direction today. Resonance Spaces showcases significant recent acquisitions and makes visible how modern and contemporary art continuously evolves through new media, international positions, and current issues.
Memory as artistic material
At the center of the exhibition is the engagement with histories and layers of collective and individual memories. The works do not simply organize the past chronologically but allow memory to appear as a movable, contradictory, and physically experienced process. Light, image, material, and spatial effect combine to create an aesthetic experience that goes beyond mere observation.
Installations, films, and objects with strong spatial presence
The large-scale installations exert their effect directly in the space. Films expand the viewing of works through time, movement, and voice, while objects appear as material traces of biography, society, and history. This media diversity gives the exhibition a concentrated tension: The individual works relate to each other, contradict one another, and open new perspectives on the question of how memory is preserved, shared, or changed.
Artistic positions between archive and present
Pinar Ögrenci addresses processes of collaborative remembering in her film Aşît. Jürgen O. Olbrich collects discarded photographic material and directs attention to private image archives whose original contexts have been lost. Michal Heiman questions in her works the structures of psychological tests and examines how perception, identity, and societal attributions arise. Ute Lindner's Exposure Times reflects on time levels, image traditions, and the history of exhibiting.
Cultural education through careful artwork examination
The exhibition offers numerous points of connection for cultural education. Visitors can engage with questions of collection history, contemporary art, archival practice, and visual memory. The works invite attendees to connect their own experiences with photographs, films, and personal memory images with art historical inquiries.
Conclusion: An art experience between history and present
Resonance Spaces awaits art enthusiasts as an immersive anniversary exhibition featuring international contemporary art, documenta references, and an extraordinarily strong spatial impact. Those who wish to experience the Neue Galerie as a vibrant place for collection care and aesthetic experience should definitely visit this exhibition live.
