Resonance Spaces at the New Gallery Kassel: Memory Becomes Contemporary Art

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the New Gallery, Hessen Kassel Heritage presents the exhibition Resonance Spaces. documenta art and other new acquisitions. From March 6, 2026, to January 24, 2027, the exhibition features large-scale installations, films, and objects that condense personal memories, collective history, and questions of archiving.

An Anniversary with Documenta Connection

The New Gallery, which opened in 1976, represents the connection between municipal and state collections with international art development. Its connection to documenta has continuously expanded the collection with global artistic positions and new media. Resonance Spaces makes this collection history visible as a lively space for thought and experience.

Installations, Films, and Objects with Strong Spatial Impact

The exhibition unfolds an immersive exhibition atmosphere. Large-scale installations physically claim the space, films open temporal and social perspectives, while objects appear as material traces of memory. In the examination of the works, light, movement, surface, and image memory combine to create an aesthetic experience that transcends individual artworks.

Artistic Positions Between Memory and Archive

Pınar Öğrenci initiates processes of collaborative remembering with her film Aşît. Jürgen O. Olbrich focuses on discarded photographic material and transforms found images into an alternative archive. Michal Heiman questions the structures of psychological tests and examines how identity is organized through institutional processes. Ute Lindner's exposure times reflect temporal courses, image traditions, and the history of painting displays.

Cultural Education and New Perspectives

Resonance Spaces invites visitors to read art not only formally but also as a repository of social experience. School classes can participate in educational tours and workshops, including an action tour about memories of the moment. The educational program connects precise image analysis with questions about collection, perception, and the emergence of history in the museum.

Conclusion: An Art Experience Between History and Present

Visitors can expect an exhibition that places documenta history, contemporary art, and personal memory in an exciting dialogue. The New Gallery becomes a resonance body for images, materials, and stories. Those who want to experience the aesthetic impact of large-scale installations, moving images, and significant new acquisitions up close should definitely visit Resonance Spaces in Kassel live.
