Resonance Spaces: When Memory Takes Shape in the Museum

The Neue Galerie Kassel celebrates its 50th anniversary with the exhibition Resonance Spaces. documenta Art and Other New Acquisitions. From March 6, 2026 to January 24, 2027, large-scale installations, films, and objects engage in a multifaceted dialogue about history, memory, and societal experience.

A Collection as a Living Resonance Space

Since its opening in 1976, the Neue Galerie has connected the municipal and state collections of modern and contemporary art. Its connection to documenta has sustainably inscribed international positions and new media into the collection profile. The curation of the anniversary exhibition makes visible how a collection changes, expands, and is continually re-questioned through new acquisitions.

At the center are works that not only depict personal and collective memories but make them experienceable as an aesthetic experience in space. Light, materiality, movement, and cinematic temporality shape the atmosphere of the exhibition. The contemplation of the works thus becomes an art experience between archive, present, and individual perception.

Installations, Films, and Objects with Strong Spatial Impact

Pınar Öğrenci's film Aşît explores processes of collaborative remembering. The work connects individual experiences with political and societal narratives and opens up the perspective on memory as a communal process.

Jürgen O. Olbrich directs attention to discarded photographic material. From seemingly incidental finds emerges an unusual archive of everyday history, where photographs oscillate between document, chance find, and personal projection.

Michal Heiman questions the structures of psychological tests in her works. Her art examines how people are classified, observed, and described by institutional systems. Ute Lindner's Exposure Times reflect temporal flows, image traditions, and the conditions of museum presentation.

Documenta History and International Contemporary Art

The exhibition brings together works by artists from various cultural contexts, including Britto Arts Trust, Hubertus Gojowczyk, Urs Lüthi, Fabio Mauri, and Amol K. Patil. This creates a panoramic insight into contemporary art that connects social realities, memory politics, and global perspectives.

Large-scale installations claim the space physically, films create their own time rhythms, and objects invite concentrated contemplation. The Neue Galerie itself becomes a resonance body of personal and collective history. This connection of art history, contemporary art, and cultural education opens different access points for experienced art lovers as well as curious first-time visitors.

Conclusion: An Art Experience between Memory and Present

Resonance Spaces shows how contemporary art does not treat history as a closed chapter but as a living, contradictory, and malleable experience. Visitors can expect a sensually intense exhibition featuring installations, films, and objects that sharpen the view of archives, memories, and societal order. Those who want to experience the aesthetic experience of contemporary art in direct space should definitely visit this anniversary exhibition at the Neue Galerie Kassel live.
