Resonance Spaces: When Memory Takes Shape at the New Gallery
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the New Gallery, Hessen Kassel Heritage presents the exhibition Resonance Spaces. documenta Art and Other New Acquisitions. From March 6, 2026 to January 24, 2027, visitors will encounter large-scale installations, films, and objects that translate personal and collective memories into sensually perceptible spaces.
A Collection in Dialogue with documenta
Since its opening in 1976, the New Gallery has connected the urban and state collections of modern and contemporary art. Its particular proximity to documenta also shapes this anniversary exhibition: New artistic positions expand the collection and make visible how museum history is recorded through acquisitions, societal changes, and new media.
Large-Scale Installations with Strong Spatial Impact
At the center are installations, films, and objects whose presence sustainably alters the exhibition space. The works not only claim space but also open the room as a space for thought regarding history, identity, and social experience. Light, materiality, movement, and the temporal duration of film works define the exhibition atmosphere and invite to focused contemplation of the works.
Memory as Artistic Material
Pinar Ögrenci addresses forms of collaborative remembering in Aşît. Jürgen O. Olbrich focuses on discarded photographs and creates traces of individual past from incidental image finds. Michal Heiman questions the structures of psychological tests in her works, while Ute Lindner's Exposure Times reflects on temporal trajectories and image traditions.
This creates a multi-layered fabric of painting, photography, film, installation, and object art. The curation connects art historical collection history with contemporary art and opens perspectives on the question of how images preserve, change, or even bring memories forth.
Cultural Education and Aesthetic Experience
The exhibition is suitable for both intensive individual contemplation of the works as well as for cultural education. School classes can utilize guided tours and workshops, including an action walk on memories and a modeling workshop. An audio guide in German and English as well as in sign language expands access to the exhibition.
Conclusion: A Vibrant Resonance Space for Kassel
Resonance Spaces combines documenta tradition, collection history, and international contemporary art into an intense art experience. Visitors can expect an exhibition that makes spaces, images, and materials tangible reflections of personal and societal memories. Those wishing to experience the New Gallery as a place of aesthetic experience and cultural reflection should definitely visit this anniversary exhibition live.
