Art Academy Kassel | Applications & Exhibitions
The Art Academy Kassel is more than just an art school: it is a developed place for artistic practice, design, art education, and art science, embedded in the cultural and scientific landscape of Kassel. On the official website, you can find current events, application information, courses, downloads, job offers, and service information for students, guests, and interested parties. With the right to confer doctoral degrees and habilitations, the KhK is one of the few artistic universities in Germany with university status, and its location at Menzelstraße 13–15 combines historical depth with a clear present, where exhibitions, portfolio consultations, and workshops shape everyday life. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/kunsthochschule/portraet.html?utm_source=openai))
Those searching for the Art Academy Kassel online often encounter search terms like exhibitions, tours, applications, portfolio consultations, product design, cafeteria, or travel. These topics are not random words but reflect the real structure of the university: The KhK operates its own exhibition hall, an annual tour, clear application pathways for different degree programs, and a service offering that ranges from library to accessibility. This creates a campus that aims not only to teach but also to bring together public engagement, research, and artistic production. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/kunsthochschule/ausstellungshalle.html))
Application, Portfolio, and Portfolio Consultation at the Art Academy Kassel
The application ABC of the Art Academy Kassel consolidates information on entrance exams and application requirements. It is important to note that deadlines and procedures vary depending on the degree program. Anyone interested in Fine Arts, Art Education, Art Science, Product Design, or Visual Communication should always check the specific program page. The portfolio is not simply a collection of beautiful works but should make personality, development, perception, and artistic approach visible. This is precisely what the university emphasizes: It is not about delivering a finished exhibition but about showing who you are, where you want to go, and what ideas you are working with. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/bewerbung/bewerbungs-abc.html))
Particularly helpful is the portfolio consultation. Appointments are announced in the events section; additionally, individual consultation appointments with instructors can be arranged, and contact details are available under the People menu or on the respective program pages. For Visual Communication, the application process is multi-stage via a digital portfolio in the eCampus, for Art Education, there is an entrance exam on-site in the colonnade, and for Fine Arts, proof of artistic talent is also required through the admission process. This makes the Art Academy Kassel a place where the application is already understood as the first part of the artistic engagement. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/bewerbung/bewerbungs-abc/mappe-und-mappenberatung.html))
Degree Programs, Design, and Workshops
At the Art Academy Kassel, about 1,000 people, including master students, study in five degree programs: Fine Arts, Visual Communication, Product Design, Art Education, or Art Science. The interdisciplinary approach is a central feature of the university, as students do not work in isolation but across disciplines. This structure is supported by 14 interdisciplinary study workshops that combine craft and artistic skills and thus clearly connect to Bauhaus traditions. Those studying here learn not only content but above all the connection between idea, material, technique, and reflection. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/studium.html))
Particularly the degree programs in Product Design and Visual Communication show how broadly the KhK is positioned. Product Design understands design as a complex field between materials, technologies, manufacturing processes, and societal questions; students work on projects and seminars, develop prototypes, and utilize workshops as well as digital tools. Key focuses include industrial design, furniture design, and exhibition architecture, design of textile products, theory and practice of design, as well as sustainable product design and development. This is complemented by a foundation professorship on the work of Lucius Burckhardt and an annually awarded project professorship. Visual Communication works project-oriented, transdisciplinary, and with specializations such as animation, film and moving image, photography, games, illustration and comics, new media, graphic design, and sound. For the field of Art Science, the location at Karlsaue and in Kassel is particularly valuable because research and practice are very closely intertwined here. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/studium/produktdesign.html))
Exhibition Hall, Tour, and Event Program
Since the beginning of 2022, the Art Academy Kassel has had its own exhibition hall in the courtyard of the North Building. On 450 square meters, students can develop and present exhibitions, screenings, readings, and performances. The space is not only a presentation area but also a communication place and experimental field for artistic, design, and curatorial practice. The hall was financed with around 4 million euros from the Higher Education Pact 2020; thus, a place was created where works can become visible beyond the campus and can be thought of interdisciplinarily. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/kunsthochschule/ausstellungshalle.html))
The event program also shows how lively this claim is in everyday life. The homepage announces publicly accessible exhibitions, portfolio consultations, and research events; currently, there are exhibitions, a study and portfolio consultation for Visual Communication, and other public formats presented side by side. The tour traditionally forms the grand annual festival at the end of the summer semester and introduces works from Fine Arts, Visual Communication, Product Design, Art Education, and Art Science to a broad audience for the first time. In addition, there are lectures, screenings, talk formats, and interdisciplinary presentations that emphasize the character of the university as an open laboratory for contemporary art and design. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/))
Travel, Cafeteria, and Orientation on Campus
The travel instructions to the Art Academy Kassel are clearly described: The address is Menzelstraße 13–15, 34121 Kassel. Those arriving by train usually reach Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe as a long-distance train station; from there, take tram line 3 to Kassel Rathaus and then transfer to line 5 to Heinrich-Heine-Straße/Universität. Long-distance buses stop at the Wilhelmshöhe bus station and at the P+R parking lot Kassel-Ost. For cyclists, there is a nextbike station in front of the South Building at Menzelstraße 15. This means that the university is well connected to regional and long-distance transport without having to rely on complicated detours. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/service/anfahrt.html?utm_source=openai))
On site, there is the cafeteria as a facility of the Student Union Kassel. There, lunch, hot and cold drinks, rolls, salads, snacks, cakes, and desserts are offered; the entrance from the Aue is accessible without steps. Additionally, the Art Academy offers a library as a branch of the University Library Kassel with a focus on Fine Arts, Art Theory, Design, and Arts and Crafts, as well as a parent-child room with a play area, children's seating area, toys, and children's books. Those who know the campus also benefit from a clear service structure, room finder, and accessibility information, so that everyday life for students, instructors, and guests remains practically organized. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/kunsthochschule/einrichtungen/mensa.html?utm_source=openai))
History, Architecture, and Location at Karlsaue
The roots go back to 1777 when the L'Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture de Cassel was opened. In the 20th century, the institution changed several times: in 1947, the Art Academy was newly founded, in 1960 it was transferred to the University of Fine Arts, integrated into the Kassel university landscape in 1970 and 1971, and in 1997 it was merged into its current form as the Art Academy Kassel. This historical path explains why the KhK is both strongly rooted in the tradition of the art academy and very closely linked to modern university development. Today's identity is thus the result of continuity, break, and new beginnings at the same time. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/kunsthochschule/portraet/geschichte.html))
The location is also architecturally special. The building ensemble from the 1960s, especially the North Building, South Building, and atrium, was created with the involvement of architecture professors Johannes Krahn, Josef Lucas, and Paul Friedrich Posenenske and is considered an example of post-war architecture with variability and flexibility. The North Building was inaugurated in 1969; the new exhibition hall in the courtyard incorporates historical designs by Posenenske and interprets them anew. The Art Science program also emphasizes that the ensemble directly connects to the baroque Karlsaue, thereby bringing together art production, research, and the Kassel cultural landscape. This location is an essential part of the university's appeal. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/willkommen/news/kunsthochschule-und-documenta-neue-bestaende-des-uniarchivs-geben-einblick.html))
Courses, Downloads, and Job Offers
Those who want to orient themselves more deeply can find dedicated areas on the website for courses, downloads, general information, and services. This is practical for searching for the course catalog, as the university organizes its courses programmatically and consolidates current events directly on the program pages. At the same time, the menu leads to announcements, awards, and job offers, so that internal communication remains visible. Thus, the Art Academy Kassel is not only a place of learning but also a well-structured information space for students, interested parties, and applicants. ([kunsthochschulekassel.de](https://kunsthochschulekassel.de/studium/lehrveranstaltungen.html))
Additionally, there is clear digital orientation on the homepage: There, news, events, and current contributions are presented side by side, and the university publicly communicates its exhibitions, research projects, and student initiatives. This is helpful for applicants because they can quickly see which themes currently shape the university and how diverse the environment is. The website thus serves not only as an information portal but also as a curated access point to the university itself. Therefore, those looking for photos, logos, event dates, or contacts will find not only individual answers on the official pages but also a very cohesive university communication. Large university with many different opportunities to study. Most classes are open to students from other faculties, happy and eager to share their knowledge. The concept is very relaxed and leaned back but the student needs to invest their energy and time into making things happen to keep their studies going and making them fruitful. While I may not like the building architecture, many people have made sure to inform me that it is a beautiful masterpiece and worth visiting. Cafeteria is cheap but the staff is usually very kind, there are vegetarian options and a salad bar, as well as snacks. However: the main lecture hall has a small stair elevator (I am unsure how to access it), the library has no elevator and is inaccessible. The accessible bathroom in the Nordbau (north portion of university) has no signs pointing out its position as of the time of writing this review.

Even if not studying here, come and see the great architecture by Paul Friedrich Posenenske, have a drink in the cafeteria and continue to the Karlsaue.

The university that held an exhibition - where Hamas terrorism was glorified... exactly my humor... a reason why my son didn't want to study here - too bad, because I had always been excited about the art school in Kassel...
