HOSTLESS at Fridericianum: Rooms Full of Memory
With HOSTLESS, the Fridericianum in Kassel presents the first institutional exhibition of Mohammed Sami in Germany starting October 3, 2026. The exhibition showcases eleven monumental paintings in which empty interiors become psychological places of memory. The opening takes place on October 2, 2026, at 7 PM; a children's vernissage invites young visitors from 5:30 PM to 7 PM for an age-appropriate encounter with art.
Interiors as Bearers of Hidden Stories
Mohammed Sami, born in 1984 in Baghdad and living in London, develops in HOSTLESS a painting of quiet unease. Doors, furniture, walls, and scattered objects initially appear as elements of an architectural study but quickly unfold their own emotional and physical presence. The rooms feel restless, almost ghostly, preserving traces of a past that defies clear explanation.
Painting Between Absence and Memory
Sami's paintings turn interiors into stages of memory processes. The absent gains a palpable presence through light, shadow, perspective, and materiality. Everyday objects become carriers of meaning: They refer to people who no longer appear in the picture and to events whose consequences remain only indirectly perceivable. Possible violence is not dramatically staged but shows itself as a quiet tension in the spatial effect.
An Aesthetic Experience of Quiet Tension
The large-scale paintings invite a concentrated viewing of the works. Color fields, architectural structures, and oddly directed light sources create an exhibition atmosphere between familiarity and strangeness. Sami's pictorial spaces are not neutral backdrops. They become open spaces for thought and feeling where the viewers move their own memories, questions, and perceptions.
Art Historical Context and Cultural Education
HOSTLESS connects contemporary painting with an exploration of space, memory, and absence. The exhibition shows how painting can transcend the representation of architecture: Interiors become psychological landscapes and places where memory becomes visible but not fully readable. The Fridericianum realizes the exhibition in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent and the Moderna Museet Malmö.
Children's Vernissage and Mediation
The children's vernissage on October 2, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7 PM opens up a unique access to the exhibition for young guests. Children aged six to twelve explore the works together with the education team and subsequently engage creatively with personal memories. Participation is free; children attend the event accompanied by adults.
Conclusion: An Intense Art Experience in Kassel
Mohammed Sami's HOSTLESS awaits the audience with a painting that not only depicts spaces but makes them palpable as carriers of loss, memory, and unspoken stories. Those who engage with the quiet shifts of light, form, color, and material will experience a lasting aesthetic experience and a special form of cultural education at the Fridericianum. This exhibition deserves a visit on-site, as its impact becomes fully perceivable only in direct confrontation with the monumental canvases.
