HOSTLESS: Rooms of Memory at Fridericianum
With HOSTLESS, the Fridericianum in Kassel will present the first institutional exhibition of Mohammed Sami in Germany starting from October 3, 2026. The series of works leads into interiors that transcend architectural studies: They become psychological spaces where memories, absence, and hard-to-name events develop an oppressive presence.
Interiors between Painting and Memory
Mohammed Sami, born in 1984 in Baghdad and living in London, works in large-format paintings featuring interiors, buildings, and cityscapes. His spaces appear empty of people yet are permeated by human history. Walls, cellars, closed openings, and everyday objects preserve traces of a past that cannot be clearly deciphered.
A Painting of Silent Disturbance
The eleven monumental paintings in the exhibition create a special exhibition atmosphere. Light enters at skewed angles, shadows intensify the spatial effect, and colors tilt between familiarity and strangeness. In this aesthetic experience, there is no loudly staged horror. Rather, the uncanny seeps slowly through the materiality of the painting.
Absence as an Artistic Force
The exhibition title HOSTLESS refers to spaces without hosts and to a conspicuous void: people are not visible, yet their presence remains tangible. Objects become floating carriers of meaning. They allude to possible violence, memory, and trauma, without establishing a definitive narrative. The contemplation of the works remains open and invites viewers to take their own perceptions seriously.
Art Historical Context and Curation
Sami's painting combines representational depiction with psychological condensation and a contemporary engagement with memory. The exhibition at the Fridericianum is created in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent and the Moderna Museet Malmö. This collaboration underscores the international significance of the artist and situates HOSTLESS within an important context of contemporary painting.
Cultural Education and Collective Seeing
The exhibition opens up opportunities for focused contemplation of the works, discussions about memory, and cultural education. Accompanying educational formats address the characteristic features of Sami's works and invite reflection on empty spaces, light, shadow, and the representation of the past.
Conclusion: An Artistic Experience Between Silence and Tension
HOSTLESS awaits visitors with an immersive aesthetic experience: Mohammed Sami's rooms remain enigmatic, both physically and emotionally. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary painting, atmospheric interiors, and the poetic power of the unsaid should definitely visit this exhibition at the Fridericianum in person.
