A multi-layered art experience between painting, language, and body

With What an old Woman Will Wear, the Kassel Art Association presents a striking solo exhibition by the Danish artist Tanja Nis-Hansen. From April 11 to June 7, 2026, a concentrated art experience unfolds with 30 large-format oil paintings that together form the acronym GRWM. The exhibition connects painting, text, and performance into a dense examination of vulnerability, mortality, and the visible traces of modern presence.

Painting as the language of the body

Nis-Hansen's works move within the expanded field of painting but reach far beyond it. Her visual worlds are characterized by physical presence, moments of waiting, rest, and exhaustion. Language appears not only as a bearer of meaning but as ornament, material, and rhythm. Everyday expressions gain a new, poetic tension that sharpens the view of female life realities and social attributions.

Between everyday life, performance, and art history

The artist works with a visual grammar that sensitively intertwines art historical references and contemporary media. Her painting is interested in space, stage, and staging; at the same time, it reflects the hierarchies of taste and the conditions of artistic production. In addition to the exhibition, screen-printed T-shirts will be offered, referencing precarious working conditions in the art world and expanding the critical discourse of the exhibition with a concrete economic perspective.

The Kassel Art Association as a place of encounter

Since 1835, the Kassel Art Association has been an independent forum for contemporary art and provides an open framework for experimental formats in its exhibition space in downtown Kassel. The presentation of Tanja Nis-Hansen fits convincingly into this curatorial line: focused, precise, and close to current debates about body, work, visibility, and visual language. The exhibition creates an atmosphere in which analytical seeing and aesthetic experience come together directly.

What visitors can expect

Those who visit this exhibition will encounter painting with attitude: monumental, language-aware, and of great formal clarity. What an old Woman Will Wear opens up a sensuous as well as intellectual access to questions of age, vulnerability, and cultural representation. A visit is worthwhile for all who wish to not only observe contemporary art but experience it in its depth.
